Match Day 10 Round Up

There was action aplenty across the West London Vets’ Football League (WLVFL) over the weekend of 27/28 January. 14 games (plus two walkovers) and close contests wherever you looked. All good.

Nottsborough up and running
The one exception to the ‘close contests’ mantra came in the Prem. Poor old Poly travelled to a rampaging Chelsea Vets. Let’s just say Chelsea got home with a bit to spare as Trevor Dennison and Scott Todd helped themselves to four each.

Elsewhere, the West London Rams remain hot on Chelsea’s heels. They travelled to play Whippet Wanderers and won 3-0. The Whippets nonetheless stuck at it impressively and they remain safely nestled in mid-table.

Ascot United (just about) remain in touch with top two. Jon Keough’s side are five points behind the Rams, but they do have a game in hand. They certainly strengthened their goal difference at the weekend, romping to a 9-1 victory against Bank of England on Friday night. A full report from that one can be found here.

Elsewhere, the big news is that Nottsborough are finally up and running points-wise. They came out 3-1 winners against Croxley. Croxley had a strong start to the season, but they will be a bit concerned that they are now just the one point above the relegation trap-door.

Finally, Claygate Royals welcomed Kew Park Rangers (KPR). Ultimately the hosts came out on top, winning 4-2. That sees them move four points clear of KPR and ever closer to mid-table safety.

As you were in Division One
Hersham Southside remain top of Division One. They registered a 2-0 walkover against Old Actonians.

Wandsworth Borough are still chasing them gallantly and they remain just a point behind Gene Shafique’s side. The Borough won 5-1 at Acton Ealing Whistlers and that puts them a full seven points clear of Army Crusaders In third.

Army Crusaders dominated Civil Service early doors, but once Civils found their feet by half-time they had moved seamlessly into a three goal. That became 4-0 before Army really began to get their respective act together. Eusebio Titus and Seif Nabil did get on the scoresheet for the Crusaders, but it wasn’t enough to stave off a 4-2 defeat.

Double H were the other winners in Division One on Saturday. They beat Laleham & Kempton 4-3. That win sees Double H move into fourth, just a couple of points behind the Crusaders (in third).

Lyonians come out fighting in Div 2
As was the case in Division One, the leaders in Division Two also found themselves handed the points via a walkover. Putney Vale Rangers couldn’t raise a side so Jamrock were three points richer as a result.

Latimer Road remain their nearest challengers. They won convincingly at struggling Bank of England IIs. Ascot United IIs moved into third; they won 4-0 at a weakened Old Tiffs. A full report on that game can be found here.

The closest game of the weekend in this division was undoubtedly between an improving Old Lyonians and Old Meadonians. Lyonians came through by the odd goal in seven in what sounded like it was an entertaining affair. The win moved Lyonians out of the relegation zone and plonks Putney Vale right back into it.

Xaverians back top of the pile
There were three games in Division Three on Saturday and all of them look like they were well-contested affairs.

Clapham Old Xaverians moved top of the pile thanks to a 4-2 victory against Claygate Royals Hounds. The returning Matt Cefai scored Xavs’ first two goals before Mark Hignett (via a decent solo effort) and Andy Douglas (following a Hignett effort that came back off the bar) added to the tally later on.

Ruislip Rangers didn’t play but – with two games in hand on Xavs – remain nicely placed, as do an ever-improving MMB. The Milkmen won 4-3 at Molesey Lighthouse.

The final game in this division saw AFC Hampton pick up their first three points on the road this season. They travelled all the way to Croxley and won 3-1. A decent effort.

Next week is a Supervets’ week, although Ruislip Rangers do still travel to Molesey Lighthouse in Division Three. That’ll be one of their games in hand notched off then. West Kensington Kings are also hosting Hersham Southside in Division One. Given that the Kings are in the relegation zone they’ll no doubt be happy if they can take anything at all from the division’s high-flyers.
