WLVFL Over 55s take on ENGLAND

By Paul Gladstone

Our first rep team holds their own against England.

Players from the Super Vets section of the WLVFL came together on Saturday 14th October to form our first representative team and took on a strong England Veterans’ Over 60’s.

The Super Vets opened the scoring within the first 5 minutes, with Tam Hughes (Croxley Green) heading home from close range. The WLVFL SV thought they had made it 2-0 shortly before half time but the referee disallowed the goal after an infringement on the England goalkeeper.

England started brighter of the two teams in the second half and equalised after just 5 minutes when Peter Jones was on hand after Jeff Hamlet’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper. Andy Gombas made it 2-1 after 65 minutes to give England the lead and 5 minutes later Garry Nelson wrapped things up when a free kick from long range fortuitously evaded everyone and ended up in the far corner of the goal.

Our thanks to the match officials, to the Cheam Sports and Social Club for use of their facilities and to England Vets for a very competitive game.

We shall look to organise some more representative game both for vets and super vets over the coming months.
